Connectivity to Nextel

Background

Many of our target customers are currently using Nextel for voice communications.

Using Nextel as the "wireless radio" tethered to our handheld has many advantages

1. The customer has already validated coverage. Any place they have voice

communications they will have data.

2. The customer has already invested in the phone (which may have been

subsidized when they signed their contract, furthering lowering the "investment"

cost of the radio) so the cost of the cable is a minor purchase. This makes

wireless enablement much cheaper than a vehicle-based or hand held integrated

radio. It is also very cost competitive, and often less expensive, than a Type II or

Compact Flash radio card.

3. The technician will still have voice as well as data communications with the

dispatcher.

At this time, Nextel is supporting circuit switched and packet wireless data

communications. The cable and docking solutions identified here will be the same for

circuit or packet. Wireless data requires activation of Nextel Online Dial Up Services.

Some items identified here must be purchased from Motorola or Nextel. Also, the

customer's software application must be capable of supporting circuit (dial-up) or packet

data.

If you have a customer interested in using Nextel, be sure to engage the Nextel

representative (the customer should know who his contact is). We want Nextel

involved in all our data rollouts. Nextel will help the customer validate the version of

phone, the version of firmware on the phone, and their contract to make sure data is

enabled.

There are three solutions for connecting an Intermec 602 or Intermec 700 to a Nextel

phone data capable phone Motorola i500plus, i550plus, i700plus, i1000plus).

1. Cable connection to the phone

2. Cable connection from the phone to an Intermec vehicle dock

3. Motorola car kit with junction box cabled to the Intermec vehicle dock.
